Communications Strategies for

Big Thinkers with Bold Ideas

Preface

Maybe you’ve been in a meeting where the smartest person in the room said the least. Their brilliance lived in the data, the deck, the details, but when it came time to speak, their ideas never took root. I’ve seen this happen with engineers, entrepreneurs, and executives alike. The cost is enormous in unspoken insights, unheard voices, and opportunities that never grow into action.

I know this struggle firsthand.

As a child, I watched my father return home from speaking at conferences. He carried a different kind of energy, lit up from having moved an audience. He was not only a speaker but also an entrepreneur and community leader, alongside my mother. Their example instilled within me the values of leadership and communication.

I wanted that same spark I’d seen in my father. So when it was finally my turn to take the stage, I expected magic. Instead, my voice pitched so high it disappeared, my body went stiff, and I had to shuffle off the stage in silence. What struck me most wasn’t the embarrassment, but confusion. How had my body betrayed me? How could something so natural for him feel so impossible for me?

That moment set me on a lifelong journey to understand the art of communication. As an introvert with an analytical mind, I quickly realized most communication training wasn’t built for people like me. Too often, it catered to amplifying extroversion or shaping charisma. I had to find another way.

So I became my own field experiment. I studied cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and organizational behavior to map how our brains process information and how we connect through story, structure, and presence. I read countless books on leadership, learning from thought leaders across generations. I sought out mentors and teachers who challenged me and held me accountable.

To overcome my fear, I tried stand-up comedy and improv, learning to stay grounded when my body felt on fire. Even my time as a hike leader for the Sierra Club taught me that guiding people up a mountain isn’t so different from guiding them through a meeting: you set a pace, mark the trail, and keep everyone engaged until they reach a shared summit, and get them safely back home again.

Along the way, I coached hundreds of leaders - some just finding their voice, others standing before the United Nations. I watched nuclear scientists presenting their life’s work, founders pitching radical ideas to investors, nonprofit leaders inspiring policymakers to believe in a brighter future, and data-driven executives building bridges between cross-functional teams. Each leader carried unique strengths and hidden fears, each needing practical strategies rather than performance tricks to let their brilliance shine. And those moments, when someone finds their voice and the room leans in, bring me more joy than anything else in life.

Over the past twenty years, I’ve built and tested the curriculum that fuels this book. I’ve refined these frameworks in one-on-one coaching, high-stakes team off-sites, and leadership cohorts. I’ve seen financial advisors raise $220M, founders win Y Combinator, scientists present breakthrough discoveries, and presidential candidates galvanize their supporters. Just as often, I’ve seen the quieter victories of an engineer speaking with confidence in a boardroom, a financial advisor inspiring her team of analysts, a manager earning trust by framing the conversation around connection.

This book is the guide I wish I had when I started: a way to turn complexity into clarity, data into story, and expertise into influence. Elevating communication takes practice. Think of it like training for a hike through the redwoods. You don’t take on the whole trail at once. You take it one step at a time, building stamina as you go. The frameworks here are meant to be practiced, polished, and layered one at a time until they become second nature.

Here’s how I suggest you use the book:

  • Pick one Framework. Practice it daily for a week.
  • Once it feels authentic, add one Delivery strategy or technique and see how you can adapt it in various contexts.
  • Finally, layer in a Presence strategy or technique. Reflect on how it impacts how you show up.

If you approach this on a week-by-week basis, you will steadily transform your communication habits and leadership presence. Though it may take months for your reputation to shift, you will likely notice immediate feedback - colleagues engaging more, funders leaning in, boards listening longer.

I say this as someone still on the path myself. It took me weeks to cut out filler words like “um” and “y’know.” It took months to stop reflexively saying “but” and embrace the improv-tested “yes, and.” As an introvert, I have to remind myself to speak before it feels comfortable. To this day, I occasionally get thrown during a Q&A session, though the framework I share in this book helps me every time I use it. The truth is, communication is not a destination; it’s a trail we keep hiking.

And like any trail, the journey is better when we’re not alone. As a life-long nomad, I’ve lived and worked in nearly a dozen countries. Every place has taught me something about culture, connection, and the many ways people find their voice. Coffee with a client in Madrid’s bustling Prado, a windowless conference room make-it-or-break-it run-through in Seattle, a tense strategy session dramatically enhanced by a torrential downpour in Mexico City, a lively role-play with a client on a layover at the DFW airport, and facilitating an inaugural team off-site in the mountains near Santa Barbara. All of it reinforced my belief that communication is how we bridge differences and create belonging.

This book is my way of handing you a map. The frameworks inside are designed to help you find your own path, to organize your ideas, speak with clarity, and show up with presence that feels authentic. Whether you’re speaking to a board, pitching to investors, inspiring a team, or simply speaking up in a meeting, these strategies will help you not just be heard, but remembered.

My mission is to create a world where everyone feels empowered to use their voice and inspire the best in others. That includes you.

So take a deep breath, gather your energy, and step onto the trail with this book as your guide. The world is waiting, the path is clear, and the next step is yours.
